Lent (2010)

Psalm 51:10 (NIV)
" Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit
within me."

The season of Lent is upon us and for many of us it is a time of
reflection through scripture reading, prayer, self-denial and
charity. The Lenten season is observed for forty days and began
this week on what is known as Ash Wednesday which includes the
practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign
of repentance. The ashes are created out of Palms from the
previous year's Palm Sunday that have been burned.

During Lent, all believers are encouraged to include a special time
of daily scripture reading and prayer. There are many helpful
guides and resources that help facilitate this practice. One resource
I have found to be particularly helpful is an online resource – www.
explorefaith.org. This website is an inter-denominational guide for
reflection and spiritual growth.

The Lenten season concludes with a celebration and remembrance
of The Last Supper in which we come together for a time of
communion and a special time of reflection. This year, the
observance occurs on Thursday, April 1 and is commonly known
as Maundy Thursday (from the Latin Mandatum meaning New
Commandment). The following day – Friday, April 2nd – we
observe Good Friday which is the remembrance of Christ’s passion
including His arrest, trial and crucifixion.

The culmination of the Lenten season occurs on Easter or
Resurrection Sunday. We will be  participating again in a
community wide Sunrise Service with other sister churches in our
Faith Community in the area including Splendora, Plum Grove, and
Patton Village. The service will be held at 7 am in the Splendora
City Park Pavilion.

I feel blessed to have been placed here in Splendora and East
Montgomery County for such a time as this. We see the news
reports of the financial situation nationally and globally and we feel
the impact as those around us are affected by its repercussions. It
is during times like this that people turn to the church for insight,
answers and peace. I hope that all of us will take the time during
the coming weeks to reflect on what God has done for us, what
God is doing in us, and what God will do through us.

God's Richest Blessings!
